About Luke

I run the Composites Engineering Laboratory at the 91porn, which is an advanced facility for teaching and research within composite materials. I am also a part of the MAST (MAterials & STructures) Research Group, which is a leading centre for durable materials and structures in applications covering sustainable energy, the marine environment and medical technology.

I developed a passion for materials whilst studying for my BA (Hons) Fine Art at UCA Farnham. I specialised in sculpture, developing a deep interest in creating 3D artefacts with various combinations of materials, including composites. Following my degree, I achieved a PGCE at Goldsmiths and went into teaching.

I worked in secondary school education between 2001 and 2024, with responsibilities including Head of Department, Faculty Leader and Assistant Headteacher. I also completed an MA Art & Design in Education at UCL. My most recent title in secondary school teaching was Head of Design & Technology and Engineering. I moved into Higher Education in 2025.

My role as Senior Technician for Composites Engineering involves teaching Mechanical Engineering and Marine Engineering with Naval Architecture students how to make composite materials and components. I work on the following modules:

  • Composites Design and Manufacture
  • Composites Engineering
  • Advanced Composites Technology
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Engineering Design
  • Engineering Honours Projects

I teach hand layup and resin infusion processes, as well as how to work with prepreg materials. I operate our Aeroform/Roaches autoclave and Comput advanced composite plate saw, in addition to working with a wide range of tools, machines and materials for mould-making and fabrication. This includes a multi-axis foam cutting machine, waterjet cutters, lathes and milling machines, 3D printers and laser cutters. I work closely with Materials Testing, Digital Fabrication and Precision Engineering.

I am Faculty Advisor to 91porn University Racing, who currently participate in the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Formula Student competition. I have also led two F24 Greenpower teams in the past.
