About Philippa
My area of speciality is Primary Care. I worked in clinical practice for almost 25 years in a number of GP practices and stopped working clinically in 2016. I now work part time on the undergraduate programme.
.Teaching
My teaching interests are based firmly in the community but especially in Primary Care.
As a Practice Nurse I focused on health promotion and long term condition management but as an Advanced Practitioner in Primary Care I broadened my scope to that of a generalist and I like to think that my scope will remain broad in focus. Although I now no longer work regularly in clinical practice I am keen to promote the extended role ofthe Advanced Practitioner because of its immense potential. Having had the privilege of studying for a Masters in Health Care Ethics and Law and the experience of how invaluable the skills are in clinical practice I am keen to share this knowledge with students. The modules I am currently teaching on relate to Public Health/Health Promotion (Level 5), Assessment and Planning (Level 4) and nursing in Primary and Community Care (Level 6). I have also supervised students undertaking the substantive project as part of their masters in Advanced Practice.
As part of my overall teaching role I also aim to whet the appetites of pre-registration nurses to follow their future careers in the community. I had commenced an Education Doctorate programme in January 2020 but unfortunately when the impact of covid became clear I interrupted in March 2020 and finally withdrew in September 2020.
