British Science Week 2026 takes place from 6–15 March with the theme 'Curiosity...what's your question?'.
Supported by UK Research and Innovation, British Science Week is a ten day celebration the whole community can take part in and enjoy. For children, this is a wonderful opportunity to engage them in science-themed events, demonstrating how science links with other school subjects and has fascinating real-world applications.
The 2026 theme is all about getting you thinking about what you most want to know about the world, and how you could find out.

Curiosity is at the heart of science.

All scientific discoveries and advancements have come from a spark of curiosity. No experiment was conducted without a someone behind it being inquisitive, wanting to know the answer. But curiosity isn’t just about conventional science, it’s part of our everyday lives, it’s how we understand and interact with our environment.
It can help us make the world a better place. Curiosity about the climate crisis and how we can protect our planet can lead us to make more eco-friendly choices. Curiosity about how technology works can help us be mindful about how we use it. Curiosity about health and medicine makes us more informed about our bodies.
This theme is also a brilliant opportunity to highlight people in STEM who demonstrated curiosity and it lead them to world-changing innovations.

Children are innately scientists.

For children, curiosity is in abundance. They’re making new discoveries every day, every moment – encouraging this fascination with the world is vital and there are myriad ways to do it. Getting them thinking about questions they’d love to explore the answers to, and how to do it, is what British Science Week 2026 is all about.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobials – including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics – are medicines used to treat infections in humans, animals and plants.
AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites change over time and no longer respond to medicines. This makes infections harder to treat and increases the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death. Measures to prevent infection include getting vaccinated, practising safer sex, good hand hygiene, food safety practices, and increasing availability of water and sanitation facilities.
The University is engaged in cross-disciplinary research into AMR, from examining deep-sea sponges in the search for new antibiotics, to inventing new technologies to detect antibiotic resistance in blood samples for more effective prescribing of antibiotics.
