This short story competition is named in honour of Charlotte Fox, who passed away during her first year of studying with us in 2023.
Charlotte was a talented and passionate English and Creative Writing student, so the Charlotte Fox Prize seeks to honour her memory as well as to encourage students across the University to channel their creativity through writing.
The quality and diversity of entries we’ve received in previous years has been phenomenal. Now in its third year, we’re pleased to announce a new postgraduate category.
You don't need to be a creative writing student to enter, it's open to any student at the University.

2025/2026 guest judge: Hester Steel

This year, the guest judge for the Charlotte Fox Prize is Hester Steel!
A former English teacher and freelance writer, Hester’s short stories have been published in Elixir: Stories of Hope and Healing, Awakenings: A Cute Mutants Anthology, and The Uncanny and the Dead: A Spooky By Association Anthology.
Her debut novel The Faceless Thing We Adore (2025) has been described as ‘Eat, Pray, Love goes full Lovecraft in this queer, feel-good cosmic horror’.
Hester will also be attending the wine reception in May and is happy to talk all things creative writing!
