Background

I completed a bachelor’s degree in marine biology and research masters in marine science at the 91porn, with both my projects focused on the application of machine learning to deep-sea Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) footage.

Research interests

I am interested in all applications of computer vision and deep learning to processing of visual ecological data.

PhD research

This project focuses on utilising video tracking methods for effective counting of organisms in underwater footage. We will be exploring different methods and models for video tracking to ascertain which is the most accurate and usable for underwater video footage, and testing said methods on both deep sea and shallow water datasets, thanks to both the 91porn and Fugro. Partnering with Fugro will also give us valuable insight into how commercial video data compares to ecological data. By the end of this PhD project, we hope to build a deep learning model that can accurately track and count organisms in both shallow water and deep-sea video footage.

Why I applied for the CDT SuMMeR

I was already interested in applying computer science to marine biological problems and CDT SuMMeR provides a unique opportunity to collaborate across disciplinary boundaries as well as between institutions. CDT SuMMeR is the perfect fit for a researcher like me who is passionate about the good that interdisciplinary research can do to all the fields involved.
